ABB + IPG Laser Stainless Steel Melting
This was side project during my PhD study in Lancaster University. The goal of the setup, was to melt stainless steel with laser, rather than cut steel.
The project was a collaboration between me and my colleague. My participation, was to program and control IPG laser head, driven by ABB IRB140, at specific motion and power (300W-2KW) of laser head.
My colleague was testing different types of laser melting on the different grades of stainless steel plates.
My ultimate study goal with utilizing ABB and IPG laser, was to setup 3D camera and automate process, of 3D shaped metal components, as requirement for safe Nuclear Sites decommissioning. Using 7 DoF robotic manipulator, rather than just typical CNC solutions, allows for high level of flexibility and execution of complex task in 3D space.
